In Pewley Hill, Zakuna’s staircase was meant to do more than connect floors — it was intended to define space. The brief was to deliver a stair that was minimal yet bold, sculptural yet restrained. The result is a central‑spine “Contender” design: no newel posts, frameless glass balustrades, and a silver steel spine that gives visual strength without bulk.

From the sketch phase, the design was challenged by structure: the spine must bear load, support treads, resist lateral forces, and pace itself carefully with glass fixings. We collaborated early with structural engineers and architects to test models, run deflection analysis, and refine connection details. The glass balustrade is bonded and fastened with discrete hardware, giving transparency without visual clutter.

In the workshop, tolerances were tightly controlled. The steel spine, timber treads and glass panels were fabricated to align precisely. On site, the installation was staged to integrate with the building envelope, ensuring the stair tied into floors, walls and other joinery without compromise.

This staircase lives in space. It feels sculptural because of reduction — no extra parts, no visible supports, no competing forms. The balance between engineering and restraint gives it quiet authority.
