Traditional Elegant Oak Staircase
Renovation Project – Broughty Ferry, Dundee
We were delighted to be chosen for this charming renovation project on the shore of the River Tay in Broughty Ferry, Dundee, Scotland. Situated in this picturesque coastal setting, the property demanded a staircase that would honour its traditional character whilst meeting the demands of modern living. Every detail has been designed to replicate the style of the existing traditional staircase, retained on the second floor above, ensuring a seamless visual connection between old and new.
Topper Staircase
Working with award winning Chartered Architects, Wilson / Paul, our traditional Topper Staircase was specified with two 90 degree winders to create a seamless transition as the treads meander around each corner. The winder configuration was essential to accommodate the existing layout of the property, navigating the turns with the same grace and proportion as the original staircase above.
A curved inner string was designed to match the elegant design and flow of the original staircase, a detail that required careful surveying and skilled craftsmanship to replicate faithfully. The closed rise stairs have 40mm Ash treads with a bullnose and CNC milled traditional detailed beading to the underside of the overhang. This intricate beading, while a subtle detail, is characteristic of the period and was vital to achieving an authentic match with the retained upper staircase.
Timber posts are also CNC milled with heritage detail and styling, all finished in White RAL 9016. The precision of CNC machining ensures that every decorative element is consistent and crisp, whilst the White RAL 9016 finish provides a clean, timeless backdrop that allows the darker metalwork to stand out.
The Black RAL 9005 bespoke steel railings are designed with an elaborate and intricate detail, replicating the traditional styling of the original balustrade. The twisted effect and decorative collars add a feeling of grandeur at every step, each component individually crafted to capture the spirit of the heritage design. The Black RAL 9005 Ash handrail is a traditional profile with a detailed design and curved elements to match the curved lines of the inner string.
Precision engineered, manufactured to perfection and installed by our skilled craftsmen with the greatest of care, this Topper Staircase stands as a fitting addition to a property steeped in character beside the River Tay.
