Zig-Zag Staircase – Hertfordshire
Structural Clarity in a Renovated Interior
This open plan renovation project in Hertfordshire presented a wonderful opportunity to create a staircase that would serve as both a functional element and a dramatic architectural statement. The brief called for a design that would celebrate the openness of the interior, integrating seamlessly with the surrounding structural steelwork whilst commanding attention from every viewpoint.
Challenger Staircase
Our Challenger Staircase with its distinctive ‘Zig-Zag’ design creates a dramatic effect and an absolutely superb centrepiece for this renovated space. The angular profile of the Challenger is perfectly suited to an open plan environment, where the staircase can be appreciated as a sculptural element rather than simply a means of reaching the upper floor.
The design is emphasised by the contrasting black steel strings from the sides and black square steel spindles, which blend seamlessly with the surrounding black structural beam and pillars. This deliberate coordination of finishes accentuates the openness of the internal space, creating a visual language in which staircase and structure read as one unified composition. The side fixed steel spindles reach full height as you approach the stairs, establishing a strong vertical presence that frames the entrance to the stairwell.
Setting the 180 degree return and stepped half landing fixed within the supporting pillars looks visually stunning and an integral part of the design. This configuration was carefully engineered to work with the existing structural elements, turning what could have been a constraint into a defining design feature. The stepped half landing adds architectural interest to the return, maintaining the angular rhythm of the Zig-Zag profile through the turn.
The Oak treads and closed risers are perfectly colour matched to the owner’s hallway flooring and look great from all angles, as this open staircase is viewed from a full 360 degrees. This all-round visibility demanded exceptional attention to detail in every component, ensuring that the staircase presents a polished, considered appearance from whichever direction it is approached. The centralised Oak rectangular handrails are colour co-ordinated with the treads to complete the angular design, their clean profile following the Zig-Zag geometry for a striking and cohesive finish.
