Sketch to Staircase: The Full Bespoke Journey

A staircase may seem like a simple object, but its creation involves many layers: conceptual design, structural engineering, material refinement, prototype verification, fabrication, and installation. When all of these layers are aligned, the final piece feels effortless — but the process is rigorous.

We begin with the architect’s vision: spatial intent, proportions, interactions with light, and material palette. Next comes structural modelling: load paths, deflection limits, lateral stability. Junctions with glass, walls, floors, and other joinery are mapped out early. Prototypes may be made to validate connections or edge profiles.

In our workshop, the stair is divided into assemblies: stringers, treads, balustrades, fixings. Each piece undergoes quality checks to ensure tolerances are within design limits. Materials are selected and finished carefully to respect grain, texture and ageing behaviour. On site, the staircase is installed in phased coordination with structure, finishes and services. Minor adjustments are made on site, but the majority of complexity has already been ironed out.

Why does process matter? Because stairs live at the intersection of structure, experience and finish. A stair might look elegant in concept, but if it squeaks, misaligns, rattles, or ages poorly, it fails. Our managed approach ensures each stair is beautiful, robust and harmonious with the building envelope.
