The Cliff, Brighton: Poised Flight

At The Cliff, with its dramatic vertical volumes and panoramic views, the staircase needed to feel light, elegant and contextual. Zakuna specified a single‑string “Contender” model: the steel stringer painted to match its surroundings, walnut treads to inject warmth, and frameless glass balustrades to preserve openness. The stair feels as though it floats between levels.

The real magic lies in restraint. The steel is rendered invisible against the adjacent surfaces, allowing the walnut to become the visual accent. The glass is set with precision, held with discreet fixings that disappear at eye level. The stair’s transitions into floor surfaces, wall junctions and thresholds were planned long in advance to avoid awkward joints.

In manufacture, each tread, stringer and glass panel was fabricated with tight tolerances. Quality inspections at each stage ensured alignment with the architectural design. On installation, the stair tied into adjacent joinery — doors, floors, reveals — to maintain material consistency and spatial logic. The outcome: a staircase that feels airy, considered, structurally confident.

In The Cliff, the stair does more than connect — it dialogues with the light, proportions, and materials around it.
